Many of today’s wedding traditions come from Victorian England. Queen Victoria popularized the convention of wearing bridal white and her elaborate lavishly ornamented wedding cake was said to have weighed 300 pounds! Centuries before the elaborate wedding cake, barley bread was shared by the bride and groom – he took the first bite and broke the remaining loaf over the bride’s head! Today’s cakes are still eaten first by the bride and groom (hopefully not broken over her head) to symbolize a couple’s commitment to share their lives together.
